PS5 and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles face significantly lower sales in Japan in the second quarter or from April to June.

Could this still be the result of the raging supply issues, which have been slowing the production of PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles?

Sony PlayStation 5 Sales in Japan

As per a news story by Nikkei Asia, the Japanese tech giant, Sony, saw a huge slowdown in its PS5 sales in the last quarter.

The sales figures of the hyped PS5 gaming console saw a decrease from its figures in the previous year of about 26 percent or roughly 200,000 units.

The news outlet reports that Sony expects to sell nearly 18 million PS5 consoles this fiscal year, which is 57 percent beyond its performance in the past year.

However, it is to note that the Japanese renowned tech firm initially projected over 22.6 million sales, but it got a bit downgraded to what it is today.

Nintendo Switch Japan Sales

The report from Nikkei Asia also highlights that the sales of Nintendo Switch in Japan have also fallen in the latest April to June quarter of 2022.

If we are going to be less vague about it, Nintendo only sold around 840,000 Switch consoles in Japan in the second quarter of this year, the figures from gaming data firm, Famitsu, revealed.

As such, the sales of the Switch significantly decreased by about 33 percent compared to its performance from the previous year.

Nintendo reportedly plans to ship around 21 million Switch consoles across the globe before March 2023.

Meanwhile, according to a recent report by Euro Gamer, the sales of the Switch in Japan achieved a monumental milestone last June.

The sales of the hybrid Nintendo gaming console surpass the performance of the phenomenal 3DS in its origin country.

And as such, the Switch now holds the third spot in the best-selling gaming console in Japan in its entire history.

Why are PS5 and Nintendo Switch Sales Slumping?

Despite that, a spokesperson from Nintendo admits that "the shortage of chip materials is having an impact on production."

So, it appears that the supply chain mess continues to affect the stocks of gaming consoles these days, and surprisingly Nintendo is also having a hard time ramping up its production.

While the Switch console maker is negotiating some procurement before the holiday rush, the spokesperson discloses a bleak reality, saying that "the outlook is uncertain."

On top of that, Sony's PS5 remains limited in stock. That said, Hideki Yasuda of Tokyo Securities says that some gamers are now shifting to PC gaming.
