To make it more difficult for under-21s to order and get alcohol, DoorDash couriers will now check provided IDs before the alcohol is delivered.

DoorDash New Alcohol Policy

DoorDash has witnessed enormous demand from customers, merchants, and Dashers since launching and expediting its alcohol delivery last year. This not only helped merchants build their companies by facilitating alcohol delivery. It also allowed customers to purchase booze securely and easily from home and provided Dashers with extra income opportunities.

But as this continues to expand over time, DoorDash will have to implement a new rule for alcohol delivery across the United States. The new safety measures introduced today will improve how IDs are checked prior to alcohol delivery.

The delivery worker will scan the customer's ID using the DoorDash app to ensure that the buyer is of legal drinking age. Customers will also be informed that they must be present at the door with a valid identification when the delivery is made.

As per Engadget, before handing out the drink, Dashers will also look for symptoms of intoxication. Do take note, though, that couriers are not permitted to carry alcohol to someone who is clearly inebriated.

The identification verification mechanism supplements DoorDash's existing alcohol delivery policies. Before you can place an order for hooch, you must still scan your ID into the app. Now, before you can place an order for hooch, you must still scan your ID into the app. DoorDash intends the scanning requirement to make it more difficult for individuals under the age of 21 to obtain alcohol.

As of today, DoorDash actively delivers alcohol in 23 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Australia.

"At DoorDash, safety is a top priority and our goal is to deliver alcohol in the safest and most responsible way possible," said Erik Ragotte, DoorDash's General Manager of Alcohol.

Ragotte further stated that by announcing two-step or dual ID verification today, they would be establishing a new industry standard for responsible alcohol distribution. The additional safety procedures will ensure that alcohol is only given to those over 21. He also promises that DoorDash will continue to innovate and discover new methods to encourage ethical alcohol delivery.

Is it Safe?

Engadget reports that the company has already put the dual ID verification mechanism to the test in many cities. It said that the functionality made it easy for couriers to confirm the user's identity and age before delivering their alcohol purchase. Besides that, they have also adopted administrative, organizational, technological, and physical security safeguards to protect personal information in order to keep ID data private.

According to the privacy policy, any biometric information that is no longer required will be permanently deleted.

Furthermore, DoorDash provides extensive information on how they assist the responsible and compliance sale and delivery of alcohol with security. Plus, this rigorous ID verification also gives customers the option to opt-out or self-exclude from alcohol delivery.
