LONDON - DECEMBER 04: Passers-by view a house placed in Trafalgar Square to launch the UK's first 'Green Homes' service on December 4, 2007 in London. Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone launched the service, which will provide Londoners with advice on how to improve their carbon-saving lifestyle and help tackle climate change.

The building features seven vertical courtyards and spacious terraces with so much greenery. In fact, the building has 50 percent green coverage with so many planted areas that take up half of its 4,550 square meters of space. There are 36 plant species, and most are indigenous to Hong Kong.

The area is filled with concrete buildings and people are in need of more greenery. COVID has even accelerated the need for fresh air.

RLP is one of the biggest architecture firms in Hong Kong, with projects in Hong Kong and mainland China. Their projects include shopping malls, cultural institutions, and housing estates.

Zero Carbon Building

One of the designs that RLP did similar to the Courtyard Residence is the Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) in Kowloon Bay, which opened in 2021. The building is carbon-neutral and has a multi-use pavilion and community space. It combines passive elements such as a layout with cross-ventilation and sun shading and with active technology such as desiccant dehumidification, high-volume ceiling fans, and rooftop solar panels.

It also uses recycled materials and sustainable timber. Additionally, the soil excavated to build it was used to build a leafy green space with 220 native trees.

The ZCB was the first one in Hong Kong to be granted permission to sell excess energy back to the power grid. With that, it now benefits everyone with solar panels in Hong Kong.

'Behave'

RLP is, indeed, pushing for sustainability. Recently, they launched a research lab, Behave, that looks into sustainability issues. One of their upcoming projects will find ways to design windows that will not be a threat to birds migrating through the site of the Northern Metropolis.

There are many issues when it comes to sustainability in Hong Kong, specifically that they still rely on gas, oil, and gas.

Human-Centric Design in Buildings

RLP has started working on a human-centric design that focuses on people and not energy-consuming systems. They are doing it in Hong Kong.

With the help of the public and private sectors, RLP can design buildings that are not only green but healthy for people. The most important thing is the human-centric design in buildings. Instead of having convenience, it is better to build a design that will improve the quality of life of people.

It is time to look into green buildings and sustainable living. And RLP is doing just that. They are making it possible to have an eco-friendly, sustainable, and healthier life.
