AI might lead to nuclear war-like catastrophic events, based on a new study.

In the latest research titled "What Do NLP Researchers Believe? Results of the NLP Community Metasurvey," around 36% of the respondents believe this could happen. 

Currently, various technologies rely on artificial intelligence to perform better. 

Because of positive results, many companies and organizations use AI systems. 

However, some experts believe that the decisions made by machine learning systems can do more harm than good to the world. 

AI Might Cause Nuclear War-Like Catastrophe Events?

According to IFL Science's latest report, a non-trivial 36% of respondents said that AI could produce catastrophic outcomes.

They believe that these events could be comparable to an all-out nuclear war. 

"It is plausible that decisions made by AI or machine learning systems could cause a catastrophe this century that is at least as bad as an all-out nuclear war," explained researchers behind the new study via their official document. 

However, people who conducted the study clarified that 36% are seriously concerned regarding the negative impacts of artificial intelligence systems. 

They added that if AI can lead to negative outcomes, they are less extreme than nuclear war-like catastrophic events.  

Will AI Really Cause Catastrophic Events? 

Previously, a Google DeepMind expert clarified that artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies might not cause catastrophic events. 

The researcher added that it is not possible but is still likely to happen. 

"Our conclusion is much stronger than that of any previous publication-an existential catastrophe is not just possible, but likely," said Michael Cohen. 

He further explained that there's a three out of 15 chance that AI can create catastrophic events.
