Regardless of medium, collector's editions have always been hit-or-miss. People expect some extra goodies after paying more for a special edition; it's a shame that it's only worth it roughly half the time.

Some collector's editions are great, and feature a ton of extra, exclusive content - some come with a 'free download' or a crappy paperback art book. People want to feel rewarded for going the extra mile, not feel like they just got swindled.

Even at this early stage, it's clear that the Mortal Kombat X 'Kollector's Edition' will be one of the good ones: in addition to the standard downloadable goodies, the Kollector's Edition comes with a Coarse statuette of the undead ninja Scorpion.

Now that is a collector's edition.

The Coarse figurine comes with a certificate of authenticity (if you're into that sort of thing), along with a downloadable costume and access to Mortal Kombat X's Kombat Pack (essentially a season pass, which includes four additional characters, though the new additions remain unannounced). It all comes in a fancy steel case, and is packed in with a copy of the Mortal Kombat X comic book.

It's a great collector's edition for those whose walls are lined with figures, but for anyone without deep pockets, the Kollector's Edition may be out of reach: the statues are all imported from Europe, and can only be found on Amazon for the price of $180. Even compared with some of the bigger collector's editions out there, that's pretty steep.

There are other editions available, such as GameStop's Limited Edition (which comes with a downloadable costume and the Kombat Pack), or the online-only Premium Edition. However, the only way to get the Scorpion statue is to order the Kollector's Edition - if you want that figurine, you're going to have to shell out the cash.

Let's be honest: Scorpion looks fantastic as a statue, and the whole package looks great, but is it really worth nearly $200? That's a question fans will have to answer on their own, but there's bound to be plenty of those Scorpion figurines crossing the pond come April.

At the very least, Mortal Kombat X is almost here: the game hits store shelves on April 14.
