The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is destroying the box office and all the films that stand in its way. The movie jumped into theaters with competition from the likes of Seventh Son and Jupiter Ascending, but those films fell by the wayside, and it didn't take long for American Sniper to follow.

SpongeBob took the No. 1 spot at the box office with an earning of over $56 million. This is huge for the film because the first movie was released back in 2004, and it too was a grand success. However, no one thought the second outing would have performed this well because of American Sniper and the two flops.

American Sniper slipped to second place with a $24.2 million earning for the week. Overall, the Clint Eastwood-directed film grossed $282.3 million in the United States alone, which makes us wonder what its worldwide numbers look like.

On the matter of the two flops, Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son, the latter only managed to gross $7.1 million so far. Interestingly enough, the movie cost little over $90 million to make, so the aim right now is to regain everything via the international market.

Jupiter Ascending, on the other hand, could only muster a measly $19 million for third place. However, for a film that cost Warner Bros. over $200 million to make, it is clear the company executives aren't feeling euphoric right now because everything now rests on the international market.

With good enough marketing, Jupiter Ascending could gross over the $200 million mark with the help of the massive Chinese market.

It is such a sad case to see the directors of the Matrix trilogy facing such difficult times. Jupiter Ascending always looked like as if it could turn out to be something special, but from all indications, it is just pretty with no brain.

Time and time again they chose to create a pretty film with a lackluster storyline. Chances are, this is the last time we'll hear from the Wachowskis because we can't fathom which movie studio will look at them after three terrible films in a row (Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas and now Jupiter Ascending.)

Cloud Atlas had a budget of $102 million, but only managed to earn $130 million at the box office. On the matter of Speed Racer, the film cost $120 million to make, but only came away with $93 million after its time at the worldwide box office.
