Jony Ive, senior VP of design at Apple, may have an influential role in an element that appears in about one second of the 90 or so that compose the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. At least part of the idea behind the flickering, "primitive" lightsaber seen in the trailer may have come from suggestions Ive made during a "boozy" dinner with the film's director, J.J. Abrams.

Deep in the gut of an interview with the New Yorker, Ive reveals that he sat next to Abrams at a dinner party and he offered the director a few suggestions about the design of the lightsabers in the upcoming Star Wars film.

They were "very specific" suggestions, the New Yorker says Abrams confirmed. Abrams says he acted on Ive's suggestions, though he wouldn't say what all that entailed.

Ive suggested nothing about the lightsaber's glowing cross guards, but advocated a rougher look to the iconic weapons.

"I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty," Ive says. "[A refreshed lightsaber would appear] more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous."

Ive washed his hands of the new lightsabers' crossguards, though satirist Stephen Colbert advocated the practically of the perpendicular beams projected from the hilts of the redesigned weapons.

"It's a lightsaber with too many lightsabers on it. It's a menage a saber," Colbert says in jest before making a case that three beams are in fact one.

The hilt protects the hands, while the beams projected out of the sides of the lightsaber's hilt block blows from enemy weapons just as the cutting beam does.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters in December of 2015, and video game studio DICE is looking to release Star Wars Battlefront 3 in team to leverage the hype of the movie. A new batch of leaks and rumors about the upcoming Star Wars game has been published on Making Star Wars.

The latest news states that gamers will have the opportunity to play as members of the Republic, the Old Republic, the Rebellion, Separatists and the Empire in a campaign that will span the entire Star Wars saga.

Battlefront 3's campaign was described as significantly longer than the 15 to 20 hour campaigns released in most first-person shooters these days. Though DICE has some restrictions placed on its for content related to Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, Battlefront 3's campaign will also cover events in those movies.
