The LG G Flex 2 has been getting rave reviews in the lead-up to its U.S. release, with many highlighting the curved display as one of the devices best features.

But could the curved display on the LG G Flex 2 and some other smartphones be the inspiration for the future?

There are a number of reasons that the curved display on the G Flex 2 is a good idea. Many think that the curved display makes for a much more ergonomic and easy to hold device. Not only that, but is very helpful for one-handed use when the display is as large as it is. The curve might only shave a few fractions of an inch off of the distance that the user has to reach with their thumb, but even that is helpful.

The curve also makes it more comfortable to hold against the users face when they are making a phone call.

Curved displays also tend to be more durable and less likely to break when dropped, given the fact that, for example, if a device is dropped on the ground it will more likely be a corner or edge of the device rather than the display. While this could cause scratches on the device, it won't spell a shattered display.

The technology of curved displays has a long way before it can really take off, however. Currently, while there are ergonomic merits, the tech is more of a gimmick than anything else, being marketed as the next best thing, largely because of the fact that marketing a device for its internal specifications is difficult because of how similar many devices are. It's largely a case of "our smartphone is better because it has a curved display."

There could, however, be a number of more practical applications for curved displays. For example, once the technology matures enough, we could start seeing more devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, which have screens that curve around the sides of the device.

Eventually we could even see devices that can "fold." For example, our smartphone could fold out into a tablet-sized device. This kind of a device, however, is a long way off from being produced in a consumer-ready capacity.

Will curved displays be the way of the future? Possibly, but not in the same way that we see them today. There are a few ergonomic reasons to buy a device with a curved display, however it's nothing groundbreaking. Yet.
