A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a group of rebels triumphed over the corrupt, evil Empire and the whole galaxy rejoiced in celebration. Thirty years ago, the original Star Wars trilogy hit theatres and became part of movie history.

The expanded universe of Star Wars comic books and novels, created in the years to follow, told the stories of the characters directly after the events in Return of the Jedi. (Spoilers ahead for those who don't follow the novels) Luke Skywalker got married to the red-headed Emperor's Hand, Mara Jade. Han Solo and Leia had force-sensitive twins. And Chewbacca -- nooo!! -- died.

However, when George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in Oct. 2012, a new trilogy was announced to be in development, and with it, a new story which would not necessarily follow the already established plotlines from the expanded universe.

With details of the The Force Awakens still being kept under tight wraps, fans can only guess how much of the original expanded cannon will make it into the new codified cannon which will tie together the Prequel Trilogy to the Clone Wars animated series, to the original Star Wars Trilogy.

A new novel which will be on shelves in September will attempt to fill in the 30 year gap between the celebration depicted in the final scenes of Return of the Jedi, and the opening of The Force Awakens on Dec. 18, 2015.

Aftermath will be written by Chuck Wendig who has been a Star Wars fan since he was four years old.

He is quite excited to be given the privilege to spearhead the first in the trilogy of novels that will prelude the three new films.

"My earliest - and still one of my best - movie-going experiences as a kid was being a four-year-old watching The Empire Strikes Back at a drive-in theater with my sister...My jaw dropped and I don't think I've found it, yet. Those movies opened up a world for me, and my love of storytelling comes from them and from the galaxy of smaller, connected stories, too..." he said.

Still keeping the exact story confidential, the only details that have been revealed were also posted by Jen Heddle, senior editor of Lucas Books, on the Star Wars blog.

According to Heddle, the trilogy of novels, as part of the Journey to The Force Awakens project, will feature completely new characters, plus one from the new Trilogy who has already become a fan favorite. It will also help movie goers find deeper relevance to certain names and places that will be featured in the movies once they are released.
