Will Ferrell is one of our favorite funny guys, but did you also know that he could sing?

Ferrell recently showed off his vocal chops by singing the theme song from the original Star Trek series on The Late Late Show With James Corden. And not only did he surprise the audience, he also outright nailed the high notes of the tune.

Ferrell appeared on the talk show with his Get Hard co-star Kevin Hart. When asked about his days as a stand-up comedian, Will mentioned everyone's favorite American sci-fi TV show.

"I did a lot of Star Trek material," says Ferrell. "In fact, I would start my act by singing the theme to Star Trek from beginning to end."

Of course, that meant that Ferrell had to demonstrate this skill after Corden asked him to sing the song on the spot. Ferrell obliged and the result was eerily beautiful, as well as a little weird.

Of course, no one mentioned that the Star Trek theme song, with music written by Alexander Courage, actually has lyrics, as penned by series creator Gene Roddenberry:

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

However, those lyrics were never sung, but Roddenbery wrote them to claim 50 percent of the music's royalties supposedly stating, "Hey, I have to get some money somewhere. I'm sure not gonna get it out of the profits of Star Trek."

Courage also provided sound effects and incidental music for the series, but left during the second season, perhaps due to the royalty issue.

Needless to say, we'll be really impressed when Ferrell busts out the song's lyrics next time around. However, we're still amazed at Ferrell's vocal range with the instrumental version of the tune.

Ferrell has been busy promoting his latest film, Get Hard, which also stars Hart, along with Alison Brie, Edwina Findley and Craig T. Nelson. The comedy opens in theaters today.
