Let's just cut to the chase, shall we? A Play-Doh movie is being developed by 20th Century Fox.

No, this isn't a late April Fool's joke. Actual, real life human beings with real critical thinking skills believe a Play-Doh movie is a good idea.

Deadline reports Fox is teaming up with toy company Hasbro to bring the building clay toy to the silver screen, and that none other than director Paul Feig is in talks to write and direct the film.

Once again, this isn't an April Fool's Joke.

Why would somebody think this might be a good idea? Hasbro only has to look at the success of their Battleship movie to realize this has disaster written all over it. And by "success," I mean absolutely no success at all. Battleship sank before it even got out of port.

But that's probably not where Hasbro and Fox are looking. Instead, they are likely taking The Lego Movie from Warner Bros. as their chief inspiration. The movie turned a children's toy we are all familiar with and transformed it into a fun, clever and downright entertaining film for kids and adults alike.

Hasbro with Play-Doh no doubt wants the same thing, but there are plenty of pitfalls to avoid. The Lego Movie managed to be a memorable and funny experience revolving around the creativity that the Lego brand allows. In the end it is one giant Lego advertisement, but it's a darn good one. It doesn't feel like an advertisement, and that's the key.

Play-Doh isn't the only Hasbro property in line to get the motion picture treatment, either. We've already seen Transformers and G.I. Joe movies, but films based on the card playing game Magic: The Gathering are in the works, as is a Jem and the Holograms movie. None of those films, however, are based on colored clay.
