Work is already beginning on a sequel to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Director James Gunn is set to return for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, as well as the rest of the core cast of characters.

But might we see some new faces from Marvel's original galactic guardians appear in the sequel as well?

A new report from Production Weekly (via Bleedingcool) seems to indicate it might be a possibility. The site refers to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as "Guardians 3000." While a film's production name and final title often aren't one and the same, the choice of "Guardians 3000" may point towards the inclusion of a whole new team of guardians.

Before Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax and Star-Lord took up the title, there was another team of heroes who referred to themselves as the Guardians of the Galaxy. This team consisted of heroes like Yondu (who can be seen in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film), Starhawk, Charlie 27 and Major Victory. These heroes are currently referred to as Guardians 3000, to avoid confusing them with the current Guardians of the Galaxy team.

It seems strange for director James Gunn to choose that particular production name if it didn't have anything to do with the film, and including more of the original Guardians doesn't sound too far-fetched. After all, we've already seen a version of Yondu in the first film, even if his character is much different from his comic book counterpart. Gunn says he plans to introduce his favorite Marvel hero in the next film but failed to elaborate on who exactly that hero could be. Might we see Major Victory or Starhawk make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Only time will tell.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled to release in the summer of 2017.
