Everybody loves to pick on the Fantastic Four.

Marvel's "first family" has always occupied a more science fiction-y corner of the Marvel universe than your standard crime-fighters, frequently exploring other dimensions and far-off worlds. The last two times they visited movie theaters, 20th Century Fox didn't seem to know what to do with them. Should Fantastic Four movies have a comedic "family" vibe? Should they be all-out sci-fi? Should they be something more grounded and realistic?

Whatever else director Josh Trank is going for with the reboot, we can definitively say that it's going to be much darker than anything the team has seen before. There'll be humor, but it has to seep through a veil of gritty realism and angst.

Borrowing heavily from the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics, the movie finds a much younger core group who are brought together as part of a government thinktank and wind up traveling to another dimension that radically alters their physiology. Bound together by their strange new abilities, they're soon called on to fight a fellow altered-explorer who's threatening the entire world.

The new cast stars Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm) and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm). The trailers look considerably better than fans had feared, but what we have yet to see is how the group works as a team. How's their dynamic — will they have good chemistry?
