When it comes to gaming, there's a genre out there for just about everyone. Some players favor action games, while others are into shooting, role-playing or sport games. However, when it comes to online streaming, this sandbox game wins the popularity contest.

According to YouTube, Minecraft has been named the most streamed video game of all time.

With over 42 million Minecraft-related videos on YouTube, the pixelated brick-building game has been watched more than other interactive title — making it the most watched game since the video streaming service launched 10 years ago.

Gamers commonly show off their creations from the game on YouTube, as well as uploading videos exploring their virtual worlds. Some gamers upload "Let's Play" videos, in which others can join them along the Minecraft journey.

"It's crazy because 'Minecraft' is also the second most searched term on YouTube," said YouTube's head of gaming content, Ryan Wyatt. "It's a testament to [publisher] Mojang understanding the marketing capacity and power of our content creators."

Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson is the man behind the popular video game. Minecraft was released for PC in its full version back in November 2011, although early versions were around since 2009. The virtual video game was developed and published by the Swedish company Mojang, and bought by Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion.

Part of the reason why Minecraft is so popular is because there is no other sandbox game like it in existence. In this open-world format, the imagination of gamers can be limitless — they have free reign to construct worlds that are entirely their own.

In addition to being one of the top-selling games, Minecraft is also one of most streamed video games on Twitch TV.

Youtube released the top ten most popular video games in celebration of its 10th anniversary. Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto ranked number two on the list, followed by Riot Games' League of Legends.

Here are the most streamed video games on YouTube:

1. Minecraft
2. Grand Theft Auto
3. League of Legends
4. Call of Duty
5. FIFA
6. Garry's Mod
7. The Sims
8. Five Nights at Freddy's
9. Puzzles & Dragon
10. Dota 2
