Pop star Taylor Swift conquered the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on May 17, capturing eight awards out of the 14 nominations, including the top prize of the ceremony, top artist of the year. Sam Smith, a British soul performer, won the trophies for top new artist and top male artist.

The female pop star is now the most-decorated artist in the awards show's history with 20 wins, replacing Garth Brooks' 19-win record.

Swift, among the top-selling musical performers in the country last 2014, also collected the awards for top Billboard 200 album and artist, top hot 100 artist, top female artist, top digital songs artist, as well as the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, among other prizes.

Swift opened the awards show with the premiere of her star-studded latest music video, Bad Blood, which features Jessica Alba, Cindy Crawford, Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez.

"This is such a good night," Swift said, very much moved as she picked up the big prize of the awards night, top artist of the year. Earlier, after getting the top Billboard 200 album for her "1989," the 25 year-old singer, who has magnificently transitioned from country artist to pop star, said "you guys embraced change, embraced me doing something new. I'll never forget it."

"I love you so much, more than I will be able to say to you," Swift added.

Smith and Swift contended directly in numerous top categories, with the gifted Swift being the clear winner. Smith, a 22-year-old male performer nominated in 13 categories compared with Swift's 14, has also earned the top radio songs artist.

With supermodel Chrissy Teigen and rapper Ludacris as the night's hosts, the 2015 Billboard Music Awards were presented in a live transmission from the MGM Grand Garden Arena located in Las Vegas, Nev.

Hosts Teigen and Ludacris quipped some jokes Sunday night as the rapper defined why he's such a good host, name-checking his music and movie credits to which Teigen replied "And I bang a musician" as John Legend stood up.

Billboard, an American music magazine which screens the whole music industry, stated the nominations were done according to fan interactions with the artist's music, which includes digital and album sales, radio airplay, touring, interactions and streaming on social media web pages as well as other online stores for music.
