The Android 5.1 Lollipop update for both the Wi-Fi and LTE versions of the Nvidia Shield tablet has arrived, and owners of the gaming tablet are highly recommended to install the update as soon as they receive it on their device.

The update to Android 5.1 Lollipop is bundled within what Nvidia calls is the Shield Tablet Software Upgrade 3.0, which has a size of 200MB.

The upgrade to Android 5.1 Lollipop makes several improvements to the performance and the responsiveness of the gaming tablet, along with enhanced security and additional support for features such as Android for Work.

The operating system upgrade also improves several processes such as the notifications, profile management and the device's quick settings menu, along with the tweaks to the user interface of the operating system. Perhaps more importantly, Android 5.1 Lollipop addresses some issues that are being experienced with the previous version of the operating system.

The software upgrade also includes the Global Tone Mapping feature of Nvidia, which will improve the display performance of the tablet. The feature is optional though, and it can be toggled on and off by the user.

Also included in the software upgrade package is a new firmware update for the Shield controller, which will improve the pairing experience for the accessory along with other optimizations to its performance.

The software upgrade will also make other improvements to the system of the Nvidia Shield, including enhancements to the tablet's camera, modem (for the LTE version), audio and other components.

The forum administrators of Nvidia revealed in late April that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Shield tablet was coming soon, and the company did not disappoint in making users wait too long.

"In addition to new features and improved security, Android 5.1 provides an overall snappier end user experience," said an Nvidia Customer Care representative.

Nvidia recently updated the LTE version of the Shield tablet to version 2.2, which brought several enhancement to the device including improved battery life and additional streaming PC games that can be played at no cost.

However, days after version 2.2 was released, Nvidia had to release version 2.2.1 as a hotfix update due to a bug that was introduced along with version 2.2 that desaturated the colors of the tablet's display.
