While some Android-based devices are still waiting for the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, some smartphones and tablets are already receiving updates to upgrade their mobile operating system to Android 5.1 Lollipop. U.S. Cellular is one of the latest carriers to roll out an Android 5.1 Lollipop upgrade, with the update targeted at Motorola smartphones Moto E LTE version and the second-generation Moto X, which was released only last year.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update is now listed at the support site of U.S. Cellular, with build number LPE23.32-21 for the 2014 Moto X and LPI23.29-15 for the Moto E LTE version.

According to the U.S. Cellular support site, owners of the two smartphones can receive the Android 5.1 Lollipop package as an over-the-air update. Users are recommended to go to the Settings menu of their smartphones and then tap on About Phone. Users should then select the System Updates option, and if the Android 5.1 Lollipop update is already available to the smartphone and the user's area, it will be ready to download from there.

However, if the update does not yet show up, users will not need to worry. This is because, as with all other over-the-air updates, the rollout varies depending on where the user is located. It is perfectly normal for the update to take longer to show up in certain devices compared to others.

A document by Motorola that is posted [pdf] on the U.S. Cellular support site reveals what users can expect once they have upgraded their mobile operating system. First and foremost is the Material Design that provides owners with a new user interaction design, followed by new adjustments that can be made to the notification systems of the smartphones.

Users will also be receiving improvements to the battery life of their devices, along with additional security measures for their Motorola smartphones.

Motorola recommends that users should have at least a 50 percent charge on the battery of their devices before initiating the installation of Android 5.1 Lollipop. It is not required to be connected to a Wi-Fi network while installing the mobile operating system, but it is recommended.
