Sorry, Xbox fans: it doesn't look like the latest iteration of Street Fighter will hit your console anytime soon... or ever.

Capcom's announcement that Street Fighter V would be a PlayStation 4 console exclusive was huge news: for years, Street Fighter games were a strictly multi-platform affair. All of Street Fighter IV's different versions saw a release on Microsoft's last-gen console, and the idea that the next game wouldn't make an appearance on Xbox never crossed anyone's mind.

Still, fans held out hope that someday, an updated version of Street Fighter V would grace Microsoft's latest machine. After all, Street Fighter IV saw no less than three separate retail upgrades over the course of five years — maybe Ultra Street Fighter V would make its debut on the Xbox One a few years from now?

Well, according to a Capcom representative, that's just not going to happen.

Speaking with Gamespot, the Capcom rep made it clear that, no matter what adjective is attached to Street Fighter V, it won't be on Microsoft's latest gaming console:

"One comment we see a lot is that something like a 'Super Street Fighter 5' is going to come out on Xbox... But the reality is that this is a real partnership. We are console exclusive for this franchise for this numbered run."

It's harsh, considering that so many of Street Fighter's fans have an Xbox sitting in their homes. That said, business is business — if Capcom made a deal with Sony, they're not going back on it.

While it's a shame that Xbox fans won't get a chance to play Street Fighter V, the game itself is looking great: Capcom's injecting the series with a lot of new ideas, and the game is slated to be one of the publisher's premier titles at this year's E3 showing. Street Fighter is easily the biggest name in fighting games today, and the series' first appearance on current-gen consoles is sure to turn heads.

Well... it'll turn heads that already own a PlayStation 4, that is.

Street Fighter V is slated for release in early 2016.
