This Spider-Man business is just a roller-coaster.

One week, we're hearing that Asa Butterfield has the gig all wrapped up, and Marvel and Sony are just waiting for the ink to dry before making the announcement. Next, we hear that that's not so, that whoever leaked that was speaking too soon. Instead, the finalists for the part — a group of five or six young actors that included Butterfield — were said to be converging in Atlanta for screen tests. Atlanta, you may recall, is where Captain America: Civil War is currently shooting.

Now a new rumor has surfaced, and if true, it's pretty shocking: it says that the contenders have been whittled down to three, and Butterfield's not among them.

Wait, what?

Yep, Butterfield is supposedly out of the running. The rumor, which comes from TheWrap's Jeff Sneider via the Meet The Movie Press podcast, says that the actors still in the running (none of whom you've probably heard of) are Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz.

However, like every good superhero story, there's a twist.

Marvel and Sony can't seem to agree on which actor they want. Sony wants Holland, while Marvel wants Plummer (wouldn't this mean Lintz is out of the running, too? Hmm...). Sneider didn't give any details on the temperament of the Marvel/Sony talks, so we're left wondering if it's a professional disagreement or if their CEOs are throwing award statuettes at each other.

Everything related to the casting has ground to a halt, which throws a bit of a monkey wrench into the plan, which was to use Captain America: Civil War to introduce the new Spider-Man to the world. Sneider explained that Marvel wanted to have the new Spidey in front of cameras pretty much nowish, but with all this, the character's scenes are being bumped up to July.

Take every last ounce of this as nothing more than what it is: rumor and hearsay.
