Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and that is exactly what Google Play is doing as it takes inspiration from rival Amazon. Google Play (like Amazon) has started offering a "Free App of the Week" as well.

Google's Free App of the Week promotion will likely give Android users a new app for free every week as the name of the promo suggests. Thanks to the weekly offer, Android users can get an app that is normally chargeable for free. This promo is available in Google's Family section, so one can be rest assured that all the apps up for grabs each week will be child friendly.

The games will have a rating of "Everybody" since they are family friendly and the first title Google Play store has on promotion is PBS Kids' Daniel Tiger Grr-ific Feelings which usually sells for $2.99.

It is presumed that the title available each week will change and users can download titles they would normally have to shell out money for.

Whether Google will extend its Free App of the Week offer to other categories as well is not known. Perhaps Google Play is just timing this promo to push its new section's launch.

However, unlike Amazon, where locating the free app is easy, Google Play requires a user to navigate to the Family section in its store. One then needs to find the green banner.

So how do you get the free app each week?

- Click on the "New Family Fun" banner in the Play store.

- Next, click on the second banner - Free App of the Week by PBS Kids.

- Clicking on this gives a purchase pop-up where the Free app of the week is displayed. Currently, you will see Daniel Tiger Grr-ific Feelings.

- Install the app as normal and you will not be asked to pay up.

In case you're thinking of searching for Daniel Tiger Grr-ific Feelings on the Play Store to bypass the process - don't. Weirdly enough, searching for the app does not show it as free and you'll have to pay $2.99 to get it.

Another area where Google could make changes is making it known which app is free that week. Currently, one has to navigate through the banners and it is only when the free app available becomes known. Screenshots, reviews, app descriptions - any of these can be deployed by Google Play store to make it simpler for users.

Free is good Google Play, but little more thought would help eh?
