It's something that many people thought would never happen: gameplay footage from The Last Guardian has finally been revealed, and the game has a finalized release window.

Originally intended to be a PlayStation 3 follow-up to the amazing Shadow of the Colossus, Team ICO's latest game quickly became one of the industry's greatest ghost stories. Following an incredible debut years ago, the game fell into development limbo: E3 after E3 passed with no sign of the game.

That is, until just a few weeks ago, when rumors began circulating that Sony was getting ready to reintroduce the world to The Last Guardian — as it turns out, those rumors were right on the mark. Sony opened its E3 2015 press conference with a lengthy demo of the game running on a PlayStation 4, and from the looks of things, it was well worth the wait.

The Last Guardian demo didn't waste players' time with cut scenes or environmental fly-bys — right from the start, the press conference demo was straight gameplay.

It's clear that the game is (and always has been) built with the Guardian companion as a centerpiece. Everything about the demo revolves around the Guardian and the playable character interacting with one another. Sure, there's the cute stuff, like petting it on the head, but it looks like most of the game will be built around navigating the environment with a 12-foot-tall griffin by your side.

That's not to say that there's no variety: while everything is built around companionship, it looks as if there will be plenty of different obstacles to overcome. Getting the Guardian to move forward, relying on it to cross gaps and hoping it'll save you from a fall were all on display during the demo — hopefully, the creature's AI will be up to snuff when the full game finally ships.

Speaking of, The Last Guardian actually has a release window. While it's not an exact date, it's better than nothing — gamers can expect to finally play The Last Guardian sometime next year!
