As the race for supremacy in the smartphone market heats up, it appears the image capture part of the equation continues to take center stage on the feature front.

As the clock ticks down on the final 24 hours for tomorrow's Samsung "Kapture the Moment" event planned for the Red Dot Museum in Singapore that will center on the introduction of the Galaxy K, it's interesting to note what the company is clearly touting here.

We're absolutely talking image capture, and little else, as what we know so far about the K is that it will feature a 20-megapixel sensor along with an incredible 10x optical zoom lens and the Xenon flash found on its predecessor.

Looks like Samsung will beat HTC to the punch on the optical zoom front with this launch. HTC's Director of Special Projects, Symon Whitehorn, was recently quoted in an interview stating optical zoom will be one of the major features HTC has planned in future smartphone launches.

"Optical zooming in a smartphone is not too far off at all for HTC," he said. "I can't give too much away, but within 12-18 months we'll see huge advances in phone optics. That's why we don't necessarily believe in doing a high-resolution, photo enlarging solution."

Apparently, all that was off in Whitehorn's assessment regarding optical zoom in smartphones was the timing as Samsung may be zooming in (pun intended) on that tech by as early as tomorrow. A quick look at Samsung's Facebook page appears to confirm the focus of tomorrow's event will the Galaxy K's lens as the page shows a close-up shot of the device's lens with what appears to be a zooming effect as well.

As has been the case with the smartphone market for a while now, manufacturers have rapidly improved the imaging capabilities on  devices as they collectively realized a long time ago that consumers simply know the best camera you have is the one you always have with you, and that is now clearly a smartphone camera.
