Apple and the iPad Mini walked behind a tool shed. Only Apple came back.

What that poor metaphor meant to say was, the iPad Mini has been quietly pulled from Apple's website. The iPad Mini's quiet exit from Apple's online store means that Apple only sells iPads that have retina displays.

An Apple spokesman told ComputerWorld what 9to5Mac had discovered earlier on Friday. The last of non-retina iOS devices is only available via third parties now and that party won't last long.

"The non-retina iPad Mini model is no longer available," said the Apple spokesman. "Now all models of iPad Mini and iPad Air have 64-bit Apple-designed CPUs and high-resolution Retina displays."

The iPad Mini was launched back in October 2013. It was essentially a shrunken iPad 2, but an ipad nonetheless, according to Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing in 2012.

"iPad mini is every inch an iPad," said Schiller. "With its gorgeous 7.9-inch display, iPad mini features the same number of pixels as the original iPad and iPad 2, so you can run more than 275,000 apps designed specifically for iPad."

Borrowing from the iPad 2 before it, the Mini ran on a dual-core Apple A5 processor and was offered with storage options of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. With a 7.9-inch LED display that output a resolution of 1024 x 768, the iPad Mini's pixel density has fallen behind most mid-range smartphones.

The Mini included a 5MP iSight camera that included all of the traditional fixings, including features such as face detection and backside illumination and autofocus.

On its face, the Mini sported a 1.2MP Face Time camera, and if reports about the next Apple Watch are true, the iPad Mini would have been faced with another redundancy because of a product at the forefront of Apple's current strategy.

The Apple Watch 2 is rumored to have a Face Time Camera as well. Speaking of the Apple smartwatches, the current version of the Apple Watch is believed to have shipped roughly 2.8 million units in the U.S. so far.

Slice Intelligence worked out the estimates of Apple Watches sold, using a sampling of 2 million email receipts from online shoppers, and shared the details with Reuters. About 20,000 of those receipts were generated by the sale of Apple Watches.
