Motorola has officially announced additional Android 5.1 Lollipop updates for its flagship Moto X smartphone series. The original Moto X as well as the Moto X 2014 version are both being treated to a taste of Android 5.1 Lollipop.

As we reported last week, Motorola officially announced the release of the Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the original 2013 version of the smartphone. The results of the previous soak test were deemed successful, and users of the handset in the U.S., Brazil and in Canada on carrier Rogers have already received the update.

The update is the first taste of Lollipop for the device, which never received an Android 5.0 Lollipop update and has gone straight from KitKat 4.4 to the latest version of Android's OS. The only U.S. users to receive the update were those who purchased the unlocked version, not those using the phone on carriers, which are expected to release the update once they have integrated it with their individual networks.

Now, Motorola has also announced that the 2014 second generation Moto X is receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop update as well. According to the company, "We are excited to announce a new software update for Moto X (2nd gen) by Motorola. This update brings Android 5.1 Lollipop to your phone along with other improvements. Android 5.1 Lollipop improves stability and provides better control over notifications."

The Moto X (2nd gen) was previously running on Android 5.0 Lollipop.

In addition to bug fixes for various problems users are currently experiencing with the phone, owners will be treated to various performance enhancements. These include the ability to access Bluetooth and Wi-Fi via the quick settings menu, faster launching of apps and improved volume settings. Android 5.1 also contains user device protection, which prevents use of the phone without signing in via a Google account even when a factory reset is performed on the device.
