Remember the Nintendo 64? Remember Super Mario 64 for that system? What if Nintendo remade that game with modern technology, particularly Unreal Engine 4?

Now, we know how it would look — thanks to this fan video by YouTube user aryoksini, who used the Blender Game Engine to create new animations from the original game. Watch Mario – looking better than ever – as he runs around, collects coins, jumps up and down and does his other signature moves, all in environments that seem so real that they're unreal.

"Here is Mario running in Unreal Engine 4, all the environment assets were taken from the Unreal marketplace, all the character actions were scripted using blueprints only, all animations were re-created from scratch as well as the PBR ready textures," reads the video's YouTube page.

Mario looks just a little weird in some of those vibrantly animated locations — but the effect is still stunning, so much so that we'd like Nintendo to take on a remake of Super Mario 64 with this technology. It's probably never going to happen, but it's nice to dream, right? If Square Enix can remake Final Fantasy VII, anything is possible.

Technically, there was a Super Mario 64 remake — as created by Mario fans to make it playable in a browser. Of course, Nintendo wasn't happy about that and shut that version of the game down. So don't get any ideas, if you'd like to take a shot at a Super Mario 64 remake yourself.

Super Mario 64 remains a favorite with many players, prompting one fan to spend six years knitting a blanket in honor of the game.

Another Super Mario 64 fan invested 18 years in attempting to nab the game's "impossible coin," eventually succeeding. Now that's dedication.
