If you missed Nintendo's E3 Direct this year, you didn't miss much. The company announced a few new games and demoed titles such as Super Mario Maker and Star Fox Zero, but it wasn't anything too exciting.

In fact, one of the biggest surprises from Nintendo weren't the new games but how the company went about announcing them.

Woven between game footage were various skits using Muppets based on iconic Nintendo characters and employees like Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime and even Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata.

It was a lighthearted surprise, and now, Nintendo has released a new video elaborating on how the partnership between Nintendo and the Muppet creators at the Jim Henson Company came to be.

It turns out the entire partnership was Nintendo's idea. They approached the Jim Henson company and came up with the idea for the various skits. The Jim Henson Company then created the necessary puppets.

The video is mostly a conversation between Miyamoto and Brian Henson, son of Jim Henson, discussing their passions, but there are a few behind-the-scene glimpses of the Nintendo bigwigs playing with their puppet doppelgangers. Miyamoto tells Henson that when he was growing up he wanted to be a puppet creator.

"I never even dreamed my own puppet would be made by the Hensons," Miyamoto says. The two then talk about how, several years ago, Miyamoto received an award from the Jim Henson company, one of 15 that were awarded to the most "imaginative people" in the world. "Even now, I have it in the center of my room," Miyamoto says.

Even if Miyamoto didn't become a puppet creator, at least now he has a puppet version of himself to call his own.
