There were many stunningly beautiful games on display at this year's E3: Fallout 4, Halo 5: Guardians, Star Wars Battlefront, Uncharted 4, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and many more.

One game that was announced and shown off for the first time was one of the show's biggest head-scratchers. Sony's press event introduced a brief demo for an RPG called Horizon Zero Dawn from Killzone maker Guerrilla Games. It depicted a distant future where modern civilization has been reclaimed by nature, humanity consists of tribal warrior/hunters and robotic animals roam the Earth.

Really, really big robot animals.

The demo showed a woman named Aloy, the character gamers will play as, sneaking around a lovely open landscape to take down a gigantic robo-creature that looks like a dinosaur made of machine parts. Aloy is a fierce warrior whose weapon of choice is a bow-and-arrow. She works her way across a landscape that features both mountains and the husks of old skyscrapers that the terrain has adapted to incorporate.

If you have questions about Horizon Zero Dawn, you're not alone. We have loads of them. What happened to the world that we know? Why are there robotic animals? Are the organic animals all dead? Did machines wipe out humanity and then evolve into these animal-like beasts?

Guerrilla's senior producer, Mark Norris, is featured in this new video, explaining the studio's thinking behind some of the questions the E3 demo raised. Norris offers what amounts to a developer's commentary on the demo, providing just enough insights to keep your curiosity piqued.

So, it sounds like any and all fighting Aloy does in the game will be restricted to the machine creatures. Norris mentioned side quests and whatnot, and with the richly-detailed world it's set in, it's impossible not to compare Horizon to The Witcher 3.

There's no release date yet for this PS4 exclusive.
