A senior HTC official has confirmed that the company's HTC One M8 smartphone will receive the upcoming Android M update.

Google unveiled its next mobile operating system Android M at the Google I/O in May this year. A number of Android smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC M9, Nexus 6, Nexus 5, Sony Xperia Z4 and more are expected to get the latest software update. However, Google has not yet confirmed a list of smartphones that will get Android M.

Jeff Gordon, the Senior Global Online Communications Manager at HTC, had tweeted in May that the HTC One M9 and the One M9+ will be updated to Android M.

Responding to a user's query about Android M for HTC One M8, Mo Versi, the VP of Product Management in HTC, has also confirmed that the HTC flagship smartphone of 2014 will also get the upcoming software update.

Android M is expected to bring in a number of features to smartphones such as a rotating home screen that will allow Android phone owners to use their handset in landscape mode as well.

The app drawer in Android M will also be changed and smartphone owners will be able to scroll vertically than horizontally on their handsets.

Google is also planning to standardize support for fingerprint scanners on smartphones that run on the Android M. Users will be able to use fingerprint scanners not just to unlock their handsets but also to make purchases in the Play Store and in real-life.

Android M will utilize a new function called Doze that will improve a device's standby time. With the help of motion detectors the operating system will have the capability to recognize when a device has not interacted with a user for a while and will automatically reduce background processes.

The HTC One M8 packs in impressive hardware specs that can compete with many new smartphones. The tweet from Versi must have overwhelmed many HTC One M8 owners, who will now wait to get Android M on their phones.

Google has not confirmed the release date of Android M but rumors suggest that the mobile operating system will start rolling out from November this year. Undoubtedly, the Nexus devices will be the first to get Android M.
