The Sony Xperia Z3+ suffers from some overheating issues due to its processor, but a do-it-yourself (DIY) fix can apparently solve the problem.

For some context, the Sony Xperia Z3+ is the company's current flagship smartphone, launching a while back as the global version of the Japan-exclusive Xperia Z4. The smartphone packs a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor under the hood, which is known to pose some overheating issues.

Reports regarding Xperia Z3+ overheating issues started to pile up soon after the smartphone hit global availability. Sony tried to patch things up by issuing a software update, but eventually it was also forced to throttle the Xperia Z3+'s performance so it could maintain proper temperature levels.

A DIY fix, however, may be the answer to the overheating issues plaguing the Sony Xperia Z3+. A member of the XDA Developers Forum has apparently found an easy fix for the problem, requiring only some simple kitchen foil and a smartphone case.

"This is probably the easiest way to decrease throttling during heavy CPU workload. All I had to do is insert few foil layers between the phone & TPU case," XDA user "schecter7" explains.

The user applied six layers of foil on the rear of the Xperia Z3+ and placed a smartphone case on top of to hold them in place. After padding the phone with foil, the user ran three benchmark tests on the device to check out performance with no foil or case attached, with only the case attached, and with both the foil and the case attached.

According to the tests, covering the phone in layers of foil resulted in a smaller drop in performance. More specifically, the smartphone's performance was 75 percent in the first test with no foil or case, but with foil it maintained 80 percent of the relative performance.

In response to this post, another user says he obtained a similar performance using copper foil with a case, noting that you don't need "that much" foil.

It's worth pointing out, however, that this DIY method will render the Xperia Z3+ NFC useless, because the foil blocks it.

It may not be the classiest or the prettiest solution for the Sony Xperia Z3+ overheating issues, but this simple DIY fix may nonetheless improve the handset's performance.
