A new report claims HTC is planning its own 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD smartphone to take on the LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime.

LG is set to announce its new flagship smartphone on May 27. The LG G3 is expected to be introduced with a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad HD display. The new screen will give LG bragging rights of having the highest resolution smartphone display on the market but that time will be short lived as Samsung is rumored to be close to announcing its very own QHD-equipped Galaxy S5 Prime.

We just reported on the first leaked images of the aluminum-clad Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime. The smartphone is expected to boast a 5.2-inch 2560 x 1440 QHD display and powerful internals like a quad-core Snapdragon 805 CPU and 3GB of RAM. Samsung and LG won't be the only smartphone makers to launch handsets with QHD displays in the near future; HTC is expected to join in with the HTC One M8 Prime.

The always-reliable evleaks is reporting what we can expect from the HTC One M8 Prime. As per the tipster, the 'Prime' in the HTC One M8 Prime refers to its high-end specs like a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad HD display. The handset is also said to include a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB of RAM just like the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime is rumored to include.

Evleaks followed up with another tweet claiming that the HTC One M8 Prime will be "on par with Samsung and Sony" in releasing a flagship smartphone with a waterproof design. HTC will reportedly use a composite of aluminum and liquid silicone to achieve this.

At this point we'll have to file the HTC One M8 Prime in the rumor category. It will definitely be interesting to see if Samsung and HTC both release new flagship smartphones that appear to be variants of their current Galaxy S5 and One M8 handsets so soon after their release. Stay tuned.
