August is like purgatory for entertainment lovers. The summer TV season is basically a shell of its former self, with most TV shows done or winding down, and all of the new shows on the fall TV slate still weeks away from their premieres.

Basically, it's a weird time with a lot of filler TV shows and movie events to get you through the final, hot stretch of summer. In turn, that will probably make you want to reach for your streaming platform of choice to see what else is on so that you don't have to spend the last weeks of the season outside. Nobody wants that.

If that's the case, HBO Now has a lot of new content on tap for August that will help provide a smooth transition from summer into fall. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with a light sweater, but you know, you can't expect HBO Now to solve all of the problems in your life, can you?

If you're an HBO Now subscriber, you will be treated to all of the new original programming coming to the cable channel in August. That includes the season finales of True Detective, Ballers and The Brink as well as the new mini-series Show Me a Hero, which stars Oscar Isaac, Catherine Keener and Alfred Molina. You'll also be able to laugh yourself silly with a little help from a new comedy special from Tig Notaro next month.

On the movie front, new-ish, award-winning films like Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence) and The Theory of Everything will make their way to HBO Now. You'll also be able to stream some let's-not-say-old-but-well-loved favorites like A Fish Called Wanda, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Meet the Parents.

Sounds like it's going to be a fun August after all. Check out some of the highlights of what's coming and sadly going from HBO Now next month below.
