Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog have sadly broken up. Yes, you read that right. The epic Muppet couple of 40 years (four decades!) has officially ended their romance.

Unlike news of the breakup of fellow celebrity couple Marge and Homer, which turned out to be completely untrue, Piggy and Kermit's has been confirmed by the individuals, so it is a fact.

The shocking news was first released by Kermit at the Television Critics Association summer press tour where he and Piggy arrived separately, thereby hinting at trouble in paradise.

Kermit then stated: "Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically."

"It can be tough to work with your ex. It can be tough to be the executive producer on your ex's late-night TV show, especially when your ex is a pig. I don't know whether any of you have ever dated pigs," he added.

Miss Piggy's comment too had a bit of a bite to it: "I have no problem working with my ex, OK? It's fine. You know what? Dating moi is like flying close to the sun. It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens."

The good news here is that Kermit and Miss Piggy will continue to work together professionally, even if they clearly don't seem to have come to terms with their split, and a lot of unprocessed emotion is still in the air. This is a juicy combination of intrigue for the upcoming new Muppets show coming out this fall.

ABC's Muppets show revival will reportedly be a documentary-style sitcom around Miss Piggy's late-night talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy, of which Kermit is the producer.

Being the professionals that they are, both Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog released an official breakup statement on their individual Twitter accounts:

The timing is perfect, of course, as it does make one very curious about the new Muppets show to see how our beloved famous (now EX!) couple will handle this difficult situation. Truly nothing seems sacred anymore if even Miss Piggy and Kermit can't swing a "happily ever after."

Who knows? We might be able to learn a thing or two about how (or how not) to handle a breakup. We can find out this September when the new show airs.
