Facebook apparently isn't ready to fully jump on the live video streaming bandwagon just yet, but it has made a move in that direction today. The company has just announced a new feature that will let a select group of public figures stream live video to their fans.

For now, the feature will be available exclusively through the company's Facebook Mentions app, which itself is reserved for celebrities and other public figures that Facebook deems fit to provide it to. In practice, though, the feature (officially dubbed "Live for Facebook Mentions") looks like it will be familiar to anyone who's used Periscope or Meerkat, with it offering a simple way to start streaming live video along with all the social tie-ins you'd expect, including live comments while the broadcast is ongoing.

This being Facebook, you'll also be able to see which of your friends are tuned in to the video, and you'll be able to watch a replay if you miss the live stream. As of now, though, there's no indication as to when or if the average Facebook user will have access to a similar feature.
