Twitter users must still abide to a 140-character limit with each of their tweets.

But as of Wednesday (August 12), all Twitter users can go crazy with their Direct Messages. The social media giant removed its 140-character limitation in DMs on Wednesday, meaning users have an opportunity for lengthier private conversations from here on out. So, go ahead and really say what's on your mind. In fact, reports indicate that Twitter will now allow Direct Messages up to 10,000 characters via the web, its desktop apps and mobile apps.

"You can now chat on (and on) in a single Direct Message, and likely still have some characters left over," a Twitter blog post wrote.

With Twitter being a largely successful public experience, the idea to kill the character limit in regards to Direct Messages is to make the private section of the social media network more enjoyable. Smart thinking.

Despite Wednesday's announcement, Twitter users shouldn't expect the 140-character limit to be removed from the public side of the network anytime soon.

"Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today, rich with commentary as well as photos, videos, links, Vines, gifs, and emoji. So, start working on those sonnets," Twitter's blog post also offered.

Users will begin noticing the removal of the character limit in Direct Messages on Android and iOS Twitter apps, Twitter.com, Twitter for Mac and TweetDeck as soon as Wednesday with the roll out to follow on a worldwide scale over the next few weeks.
