The Motorola X Play could be making its way to the U.S. after all, launching as a Verizon exclusive called the Droid Maxx 2.

Just last week, some intriguing rumors regarding an upcoming Motorola Droid Maxx 2 started making rounds. More specifically, this Droid Maxx 2 is widely believed to hit the U.S. as a rebranded version of the Moto X Play. Initial rumors suggested that the Moto X Play would not be reaching the U.S., but the latest leaks suggest that it may arrive after all, even if it debuts as an exclusive to Verizon Wireless.

The original Motorola Droid Maxx stirred lots of interest mainly due to its large battery capacity, as it packed a notable 3,500 mAh cell. The new Moto X Play, meanwhile, rocks an even larger 3,630 mAh battery unit, further fueling theories that it would be a suitable successor to the Droid Maxx.

While it's all still in the rumor state at this point, a new leak now lends more credibility to the claim. A couple of rear covers with the Verizon logo and the Droid branding just surfaced online from Hellomotohk, which focuses on Motorola-related news and rumors.

As a reminder, the Moto X Play sports a 5.5-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, translating to a pixel density of 401 pixels per inch (ppi). Under the hood, the handset packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC comprising of an octa-core 1.7GHz CPU and Adreno 405 graphics, paired with 2GB of RAM.

Other specifications include 32GB of internal storage space, microSD support for additional storage, a 21-mehapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel selfie cam, and a neat P2i nanocoating for resistance to spills and light rain. On the software front, the Moto X Play runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box.

The alleged Droid Maxx 2 rear covers shown in these newly-leaked images are the white and lime models, while the additional two covers with the Motorola logo and the camera module are for the Moto X Play.

It remains unconfirmed for now whether the Moto X Play will indeed hit the States as a Verizon-branded Droid Maxx 2, or, if true, just when exactly will it launch. Nevertheless, if Motorola plans to launch a Droid Maxx 2 in the U.S., more information should come to light soon enough.
