Facebook has surpassed an important milestone, with the social network seeing one billion people log in over the course of a single day for the first time ever.

The record number of users on Facebook, which was achieved on Aug. 24, was announced by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg through a post on the social network.

According to Zuckerberg, one out of every seven people on Earth used the social network on the record-breaking day to connect with family and friends.

Zuckerberg continues by saying how proud he is of the progress that the Facebook community has made, while also claiming that the community founded on the social network stands for allowing all people to have a voice, promoting understanding and giving everyone with opportunities in the modern world.

"A more open and connected world is a better world. It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values," Zuckerberg also said, ending the post by thanking the Facebook community in allowing the social network to reach the historic milestone and by stating how he is looking forward to what else Facebook can accomplish.

Facebook is the biggest social network in the world by far, with a monthly active user base of about 1.5 billion. In comparison, Twitter only has 316 million monthly active users.

Facebook has been experiencing steady growth, with users on mobile devices playing a key role in the social network's success. Over 87 percent of the average 968 million users logging into Facebook daily do so either from a smartphone or a tablet.

The mission of Facebook has expanded beyond its social network though, as it aims to connect all the people in the world to each other through initiatives such as providing an Internet connection too all parts of the globe.

Facebook is also looking to make strides in the growth of its Messenger communication service, which about 700 million users have tried out. To help with this goal, the company has unveiled M, Facebook's own digital personal assistant that is powered by artificial intelligence.

M is different from other digital personal assistant such as Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana as it will be able to not only search for information for the user, but to carry out and complete real-world tasks as well.
