The highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will see the return Nuketown, which is of one of the most popular multiplayer maps in the history of the franchise, Activision announced.

However, gamers will see that the new Nuketown has undergone big changes, as developer Treyarch said that it re-imagined the multiplayer map for the setting of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 in the year 2065. The first image of Nuketown for the upcoming latest installment of the Call of Duty franchise does not look like how gamers would remember the map, with its name also changed to a stylized Nuk3town.

The change in the design of Nuketown is not a surprising one, given the mentioned update into a futuristic environment along with the evolution of the franchise. Nuk3town will look to retain what made gamers love the first Nuketown maps, while also offering players with a new battleground that will allow them to take advantage of the new movement mechanics featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

"We carefully adapted the design of the map to make sure that it fit with our new movement system, but to also make sure that we retained the spirit and the fun that made fans fall in love with it in the first place," said Mark Lamia, the head of Treyarch, in a statement.

Nuketown first appeared in the original Call of Duty: Black Ops which was released in 2010. The map was based on a typical suburb in the United States in the 1950s which was used as a nuclear testing ground to show the effects of nuclear weapons on residential areas. At the end of each game played in Nuketown, a nuclear bomb explodes, with soldiers on the map being reanimated into zombies.

The map was also featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in 2012, where it was re-imagined as Nuketown 2025. The map then appeared as Nukehouse in Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified released in the same year.

The map will be available with pre-ordered copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It seems that gamers on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will not be able to enjoy Treyarch's update to the well-loved multiplayer map.
