Microsoft may have disappointed fans by discontinuing the popular Windows Media Center in the latest Windows 10 operating system.

The media suite, which first came with Windows XP, was also available on the Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, the arrival of Windows 8 saw Windows Media Center notably missing in action, but could be purchased for a fee. Fans had hoped that just like the Start button, Windows 10 would perhaps also mark the return of the media center, but that is quite impossible as Microsoft discontinued the software.

The company thinks that the preinstalled apps in the OS can substitute the entertainment software's presence.

However, users who have upgraded to Windows 10 are hankering for Windows Media Center and have now found a workaround to fulfil their wish. Users at the MDL forum discovered the workaround which will allow Windows 10 OS users to install the media suite on their PC.

Here's how to install Windows Media Center on your Windows 10 PC. Remember to make a backup of important data before you begin the process. Ensure you have Windows 10 build 10240 i.e. the RTM version or 10532 (first preview).

Step 1: Download the file "WindowsMediaCenter_10.0.10134.0.zip" from here.

Step 2: Extract the file.

Step 3: Search for the file "_TestRights.cmd" and then run the same as an administrator. To do this right click the file and check "Run as administrator" option.

Step 4: Wait for the command prompt to appear. Once the process is over, reboot your PC.

Step 5: Once rebooted, look for the file "Installer.cmd" in the extracted folder and run the same as an administrator. To do this right click the file and check "Run as administrator" option.

Step 6: Once the installation is over you will see the message "Press any key to exit."

Windows Media Center is now successfully installed on your Windows 10 PC. If you search the taskbar you will see that it has been installed. You can pin the same to the Start Menu.
