Fans and followers of Shovel Knight will be delighted to know that developer Yacht Club Games is readying an additional story campaign Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows.

A year after its release, Shovel Knight, a classic-themed action adventure game featuring notable characters and set in an 8-bit retro world, has already established a sizable community, mostly due to the nostalgia that it brings—a certain level of difficulty and fun, which those who have played NES/Famicom can relive. The game has also been recognized as one of 2014's best.

In March, following the game's success and recognition, Yacht Club announced that Shovel Knight would have a free additional story campaign, which the company dubbed Plague of Shadows. Six months after the announcement, the developer finally set a date for when it will roll out the Shovel Knight DLC.

"Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is a free update primed to appear on all existing platforms and regions on Sept. 17," said Yacht Club.

The Plague Knight, in Shovel Knight's campaign, is the boss at the Explodatorium. In the new free campaign pack, however, players will be able to play adventures following the Plague Knight's story as he tries to collect certain ingredients that the other knights guard, unknowingly, in order to "concoct a potion of unlimited power."

For the Plague Knight campaign to be unlocked, the Shovel Knight campaigns must first be completed with the Enchantress defeated. Yacht Club has also created contingencies in case progress for the original campaign gets wiped because of the DLC installation. The company is prepared to give out unlock codes for the new campaign in case the scenario occurs.

Shovel Knight is available both on Steam and Yacht Club's own website for $15 and $25 for the deluxe version, which includes the manual and art book. As mentioned, the DLC will be released on all platforms, console and PC alike.

Yacht Club has provided a trailer video for Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows.
