In 2006, Peter Kuper and his family moved to the Oaxaca. Upset with the political environment in the U.S. post-9/11 and hoping to expose his young daughter to a new culture and language, the family lived in the southern Mexican state through 2008, a period that resulted in Diario de Oaxaca, a gorgeous collection documenting the area's stunning street art as well as a concurrent teacher strike.

Kuper's latest book returns to the setting, telling the fictionalized tale of a couple traveling to Oaxaca interweaved with a monarch butterfly's parallel seasonal journey.

Kuper's interplay between rich color palettes and stark monochrome pages bring to life both the lush landscapes and harsh daily realities of life in the country, all while the cartoonist tells his deepest tale since 2007's critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical Stop Forgetting To Remember.

Below is an exclusive five-page preview of Ruins, which is due out September 22nd from British publisher SelfMadeHero.
