BlackBerry fans who have been following the trail of leaks leading up to the BlackBerry Venice will be surprised to know that BlackBerry Venice will not hit retail stores. Instead, the slider smartphone that will also be BlackBerry's first Android phone will be sold as the BlackBerry Priv.

Prominent leaker Evan Blass, better known by his Twitter handle @evleaks, shared the news on his Twitter page.

While many people may be disappointed in BlackBerry's name choice for its much anticipated smartphone, it does make sense for the company to name the device Priv instead. It's short and snappy, making it just right for its enterprise customers. And more importantly, it stands for the privacy-minded focus for all BlackBerry products. Still, Venice does roll off the tongue quite nicely.

So long, Venice. Hello, Priv.

Blass also posted a brand new render of the BlackBerry Venice, err, BlackBerry Priv on Twitter. The image doesn't tell us anything we don't already know, but it does confirm earlier reports that the smartphone will run on nearly stock Android with a few BlackBerry features. It also shows the physical keyboard sliding out from under the huge display, as well as the BlackBerry logo on top of the display.

Meanwhile, those who want to see more color on the upcoming BlackBerry handset may check out a group of new renders developed by designer @Pootermobile. When BlackBerry President of Devices and Emerging Solutions Ron Louks teased BlackBerry Priv at the Mobile World Congress in March, he only showed a device in black and white. These new renders adding red, purple, silver and sky blue, however, lend an interesting twist to the smartphone.

While the BlackBerry Priv may officially launch only in black and white, it's not impossible for BlackBerry to release new colors afterwards. After all, the square-display BlackBerry Passport had a limited edition in red, and the redesigned smartphone came in silver.

No release date has been announced for the BlackBerry Priv, but as the numerous leaks and even a hands-on video point out, it's like the new smartphone will be unveiled soon enough. The BlackBerry Priv is shaping up to be a pretty interesting device, with a Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3 GB of RAM, a 5.4-inch Quad HD display, an 18-megapixel back camera and a 5-megapixel front shooter.
