This mailbox literally had a monkey on its back.

On Sept. 28, the Florida Police Department received a call about something that none of them expected. A lady from Hidden Lakes called 911 and reported that there was a monkey, sitting on top of a mailbox, eating the mail.

The police immediately responded and headed to the Hidden Lakes subdivision of Sanford. Five officers, as well as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, responded to the call. Lo and behold, the caller was not exaggerating. The same monkey was found climbing a street sign. According to a public information officer, the police utilized a water bottle in an attempt to lure the animal to the police car. The plan seemed to work, until the monkey leapt on top of the police vehicle and began to pull off the molding. Fortunately, its owner arrived and identified it as Zeek.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) safeguards more than 575 species of wildlife, more than 200 native species of freshwater fish, and more than 500 native species of saltwater fish. They have taken upon themselves the responsibility of harmonizing these species' needs with nearly 19 million people and millions of tourists who share the land and water in Florida's wildlife.

The FWC was founded on July 1, 1999 as a result of a constitutional amendment approved in the 1998 General Election as part of the package proposed by the Constitution Revision Commission. After five years, they were able to confer with stakeholders, employees and other interested parties and come up with a fresh organizational structure that was able to cater to the complex conservation issues of the new century.

The commission's new structure draws into on habitat management as it is known to take a direct effect on various species. It aims to on move the decision-making process closer to the general population without requiring additional funding or additional positions.
