If you're a fan of naturalistic, harsh contemporary westerns (think 2014's The Homesman), then the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle The Revenant might be the film for you.

Tweeted out by the account for the 20th Century Fox movie earlier today, the trailer for the western thriller inspired by true events features DiCaprio as a bearded frontiersman fording a river, foaming at the mouth before seemingly being buried alive, as well as fighting a bear, among other things.

Directed by Alejandro Iñárritu — whose last major film Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Innocence) won him an Academy Award for Best Director and for Best Picture earlier this year — The Revenant is adapted from a 2002 novel of the same name by author Michael Punke, based on the life of the famous fur trapper and frontiersman Hugh Glass. The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the protagonist, as well as Tom Hardy and Will Poulter.

Here is the official movie synopsis:

"In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption."

The Revenant will have a limited release in theaters on Christmas Day 2015, and a wide release on Jan. 8, 2016.
