Google has unveiled two nifty handsets that are looking to dominate the competitive smartphone space: the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Both the LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-made Nexus 6P pack in quite a punch. We take a look at how the two smartphones compare against each other.

Display

The Nexus 6P sports a 5.7-inch WQHD AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2,540 x 1,440 pixels. By comparison, the Nexus 5X has a smaller 5.2-inch FHD LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The Nexus 6P also boasts a higher pixel density of 518 ppi vis-à-vis the 423 ppi of the Nexus 5X.

The Huawei-made smartphone also has Corning Gorilla Glass 4 versus the LG-made phone's Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Dimensions

The Nexus 6P measures 159.3 x 77.8 x 7.3 mm, while the Nexus 5X sports dimensions of 147.0 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm, making the former taller and wider.

For those looking for a svelte smartphone, the Nexus 6P is a better option as it is 0.6 mm thinner than the Nexus 5X.

At 136 grams, the Nexus 5X is also lighter than the Nexus 6P, which weighs 178 grams.

Processor

The Nexus 5X is powered by a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor clocked at 1.8GHz and Adreno 418 GPU. By comparison, the Nexus 6P houses a faster octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at 2GHz and Adreno 430 GPU.

The Nexus 6P also edges out the Nexus 5X when it comes to memory with 3GB of RAM compared to the latter's 2GB.

Internal Storage

The Nexus 6P will be available in three options: 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The Nexus 5X, on the other hand, will be available only in 16GB and 32GB options.

Both smartphones do not have an expandable memory option.

Camera

The two smartphones are on even keel when it comes to the primary camera since both pack in a 12.3MP rear-facing camera with laser autofocus and an f/2.0 aperture. The camera is capable of 4K video capture and supports CRI-90 dual flash.

The cameras have a 1.55 µm sensor, which is able to capture "more light than almost any other on the market."

The Nexus 6P has an 8MP selfie camera, which bests the 5MP front-facing camera sported by the Nexus 5X. Both selfie cams have a 1.4 µm sensor, but the Nexus 6P's front-facing camera has an f/2.4 aperture versus the Nexus 5X's f/2.0.

Battery

The Nexus 6P houses a powerful non-removable 3,500mAh battery, which is bigger than the 2,700mAh non-removable battery on the Nexus 5X.

Both smartphones support fast charging. While the Nexus 5X can offer 3.8 hours of use in 10 minutes, the Nexus 6P manages almost double the time, 7 hours, in the same time frame.

Operating System

Both the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X will come pre-loaded with the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Sensors

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P include a fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, hall sensor and Android Sensor Hub.

Pricing, Colors & Availability

The 32GB, 64GB and 128GB Nexus 6P will set consumers back by $499, $549 and $649, respectively. The smartphone will be available in three hues: Graphite, Frost and Aluminum.

The Nexus 5X will cost $379 and $429 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively. The smartphone will be available in three hues: Carbon Black, Sports White and Ice Blue.

Both handsets are up for preorder on the Google Play Store and will make their way to users by the end of October. The Nexus 6P is also being retailed by Huawei on its U.S. online store.

Verdict: Which of the two smartphones is the better buy? The price-sensitive consumer can opt for the Nexus 5X as it has a great camera and reasonably decent features and is cheaper.

However, for those looking for a more premium-looking device with a bigger screen and better resolution, as well as more battery life, the aluminum-made Nexus 6P is a better choice than the polycarbonate-made Nexus 5X.
