Zack Snyder has most recently been in the news for his upcoming superhero flick Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but now another side project of the director's – a serialized version of Watchmen – is getting some attention, namely from HBO. The television network is purportedly in talks with Snyder about picking up the show, according to Collider.

Snyder is no stranger to Watchmen, having helmed a live-action full-feature adaptation of the DC Comics masterpiece, originally written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. The 2009 film was met with bifurcating reviews, and while it had a strong opening weekend at the box office, its sales quickly plummeted; despite this, it has achieved something akin to cult status with Watchmen fans since it first premiered.

As Collider notes, just because HBO and Snyder are discussing the possibility of germinating a Watchmen TV show doesn't mean that it will become a reality. Rumors concerning adaptations of Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex, Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay (as well as his fantastical period drama Hobgoblin), and many others were met with much fanfare, but either dissolved or were/are stuck in preproduction purgatory.

Also unknown is whether the series will be based on the same source material that Snyder's Watchmen movie adapted, or whether it will come from the Before Watchmen series.
