Video game movies don't have the best reputation, but there are now two more reasons to hope that the upcoming Assassin's Creed film may break the cycle. Deadline reports Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson are joining the cast of the film alongside star Michael Fassbender.

Irons will play the father of Marion Cotillard's character, while Gleeson will play the father of Fassbender's character. Since Fassbender is playing two characters, Callum Lynch in the present and his Assassin ancestor Aguilar in 15th century Spain, it's unclear exactly which character Gleeson will be a father to.

It's definitely good news for Assassin's Creed fans. The film's lineup of actors, as well as director Justin Kurzel, means the potential is there for not only a film that does justice to the game franchise, but expands upon it in new ways. Ubisoft announced the Assassin's Creed movie will be a new part of the Assassin's Creed canon, as opposed to being an adaptation of a particular game. In that way, the movie will join the books, comics and spin-off games that have helped create a rich, massive and more than a little confusing narrative that spans centuries.

The movie is expected to begin filming next week. We've seen a glimpse of what Fassbender and Kurzel are capable of in a recentlly-released trailer for Macbeth, but what can viewers expect from Irons and Gleeson? Irons will soon play the role of Batman's butler Alfred Pennyworth in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice next year. You can get a glimpse of his performance as Alfred in the latest trailer for the film.

Gleeson can be seen in the Tom Cruise sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow, also known as Live Die Repeat. He will appear in the Ron Howard-directed In The Heart of the Sea in December.
