The live action debut of Attack on Titan Part 1 in American theaters didn't go as smoothly as distributor FUNimation might have hoped. At a handful of theaters across the nation, the film's subtitles froze about a third of the way into the film at the line "I've been waiting for this day!"

Some theaters offered refunds and chose to restart the film from the beginning, but the damage was already done. Nobody was initially sure what exactly was causing the subtitle problem, but now FUNimation has issued an official statement on the matter.

"As reported online, there was a glitch in the middle of the Attack on Titan Part 1 which caused the subtitles to freeze on a single line of text for 10 or more minutes while the movie continued to play," FUNimation says in their statement. "FUNimation became aware of the subtitle problem on Monday, September 28. All exhibitors were alerted to the issue and worked with Deluxe to provide a simple fix that same day to correct the software error."

FUNimation goes on to say that those theaters which failed to implement the software fix were the ones that encountered the subtitle glitch.

"The handful of theaters that experienced the subtitle problem last night did not implement the fix, which resulted in the glitch during their screenings," FUNimation writes. "Our theatrical division and Deluxe are in contact with these specific locations to confirm the fix is being implemented and what, if any, assistance FUNimation can provide to ensure this problem does not occur again during the remainder of the Attack on Titan Part 1 theatrical run. FUNimation will be hardcoding subtitles on Attack on Titan Part 2 and other future releases to prevent this problem from happening again."

That's good news for fans who are still interested in seeing Attack on Titan Part 2, which will be in American theaters starting Oct. 22. Still, all of this could have been avoided if 1.) FUNimation had hardcoded the subtitles in the first place and 2.) movie theaters implemented the fix in a timely fashion. But at least all of those who attended the glitch showing got a good laugh out of it, and hopefully their money back.
