Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been rolled out to Nexus devices and the new operating system (OS) will also be released to other Android smartphones in the near term. The HTC One M8 Google Play Edition (GPE) may get the software update within October.

Soon after the official launch of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, HTC revealed a list of its smartphones that will get the new OS. The list included the HTC One M9, HTC One M8, HTC One M9+ and HTC One E9+.

While HTC has announced a list of its devices that will receive the latest OS update, the company did not confirm the release date of the software for individual handsets. The HTC list did mention that the HTC One M9 and the HTC One M8 will get Android 6.0 Marshmallow by the end of 2015.

Mo Versi, the VP of Product Management at HTC, has tweeted that the company is planning to roll out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the HTC One M8 GPE by the end of this month.

The HTC One M8 GPE runs on stock Android without the HTC Sense UI. However, the handset still contains some HTC software so that the smartphone can support certain features like the HTC Photo Edit app for use with the Duo Camera. Owners also have the option to download HTC Sense apps from the Play Store.

HTC discontinued the GPE version of the HTC One M8 on January 2015.

The HTC One M8 GPE came running on Android 4.4 KitKat straight out of the box. In November 2014, Nexus smartphones and tablets were the first to get Android 5.0 Lollipop. The HTC One M8 GPE received the software update just within five days after it hit Nexus devices, making the HTC smartphone one of the first mobile phones to receive the new Android OS.

HTC One M8 GPE owners should be assured that they will get Android 6.0 Marshmallow as soon as possible. However, the regular HTC One M8 may have to wait for the update a bit longer.
