Like most other publishers, Dark Horse used New York Comic Con 2015 as an opportunity to announce a new title — but Lone Wolf 2100 is quite a bit stranger than most other books on the show floor.

The first Lone Wolf story was published back in 1970, and told the story of a samurai warrior forced to live his life as an assassin and protect his 3-year-old son at the same time. It's widely regarded as one of the most influential manga series ever written, getting a TV series, four plays and six different movies. To put it bluntly, Lone Wolf and Cub is huge.

Then, back in 2003, Dark Horse announced that it would be remaking the series as Lone Wolf 2100, a post-apocalyptic story featuring many of the series' recurring characters. While it may not have become as influential as its inspiration, many fans hold it in high regard — which may be why Dark Horse is remaking the series.

That's right: Dark Horse is publishing a remake of a reboot.

Simply titled Lone Wolf 2100 (again), the series is being written by Eric Heisserer and drawn by Miguel Sepulveda — aside from that, not much is known about the book itself. Considering that it's not being touted as a sequel, it's safe to assume that most of the story will transfer over from the 2003 version, though it's possible that Heisserer and Sepulveda could take the series in a different direction.

It's a strange move, true, but Lone Wolf has proven to be a story that stands the test of time. If this latest version of Lone Wolf 2100 is as good as its predecessors, Dark Horse has nothing to worry about.

Lone Wolf 2100 is set to hit store shelves in January 2016.
