AT&T has rolled out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop software update to its Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge at the IFA in Berlin in September 2014. Both the smartphones came running on Android 4.4 KitKat straight out of the box.

AT&T has not released an official changelog for the software update but it is expected to improve overall performance and also bring enhanced security to the Samsung smartphones. It has not been long that the international versions of the handsets received Android 5.1.1 Lollipop but the upgrade did not bring a patch to fix Stagefright vulnerability.

A report suggests that it remains unclear if the software update on AT&T versions of Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge will get a fix for Stagefright.

Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge customers on AT&T should get a notification about the software update. However, customers can go to Settings, then About Phone then Software Updates and tap on "Check for Updates" on their device and check if they have received the update.

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop software update weighs about 700 MB. To download the update, it is preferable that customers are connected to a Wi-Fi network and their phones should have at least 60 percent of battery charge.

Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge are not the only devices getting Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. In late September the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge also received Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Google has already released Android 6.0 Marshmallow to some of its Nexus devices. Many Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge customers would have hoped to the latest Android operating system (OS) on their handset but the new OS is still to arrive on non-Nexus devices.

Moreover, it also depends on carriers on when they will release software updates to their version of smartphones. One carrier may release a software update to its smartphones, but another carrier may take months before releasing new software updates to specific phones.

For now, AT&T customers should be happy to get Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on their Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge.
